The direct answer

Yes, there are female psychiatrists available online in Pakistan

A female psychiatrist online in Pakistan is a PMDC-licensed woman doctor who can diagnose mental illness and prescribe medication. SehatYab's female consultants see patients across Pakistan by video or audio call on Google Meet. Book directly, no referral needed, and no reason required for preferring a woman doctor.

Pakistan has just 0.19 psychiatrists per 100,000 people, and female practitioners are concentrated almost entirely in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. If you are elsewhere, local access is very likely out of reach, part of why around 90% of people with mental illness in Pakistan remain untreated (WHO-AIMS evaluation).

Preferring a woman doctor is a normal clinical choice and in psychiatry, where conversations go deeper than most, it matters more than usual. Whether you speak more freely with a woman, or you're discussing your cycle, a pregnancy or a marriage, no reason needs explaining.

Online access changes your location, not the standard of care. The consultation follows the same structured psychiatric interview as a clinic visit - your history, symptoms, sleep, medications and goals. A prescription or a psychologist referral follows, based on what you need.

How private it actually is

What happens to the session, and who can see it

Most of the worry about consulting a psychiatrist is not about the psychiatry. It is about who finds out. It helps to know exactly how the technical chain works, because once you can see it, the fear tends to shrink to its real size. There is no clinic address on your bank statement, no reception desk, no corridor where a neighbour or a colleague might see you sitting. The only three points in the chain are your device, the meeting link, and the doctor.

How private an online psychiatric consultation is A three-step chain. Your own phone or laptop connects to a private Google Meet link that is sent only to you by SMS and email, which connects to your doctor. Three notes around the chain state that the session is not recorded, that no one else can join without the link, and that there is no clinic reception or waiting room where you could be seen. THE WHOLE CHAIN, END TO END Your device Your own phone or laptop, in a room with the door shut A private Meet link Sent only to you, by SMS and email, after you book One link. One patient. Your doctor A female consultant psychiatrist, if you chose one Not recorded No video or audio recording is made of your session No one can join uninvited Without the link nobody else can enter the call No waiting room There is no reception where you could be seen or asked
Confidentiality in practice: what you tell your psychiatrist stays between you and the clinical team. Your notes and prescriptions are not shared with your family, your husband, your in-laws or your employer without your consent. The only exception is the one that applies to every doctor in the country, which is a serious and immediate risk to life.
The real obstacles

The things that actually stop women booking

Each of these is a practical problem with a practical answer. None of them is a reason to go without treatment.

Being seen going into a psychiatric clinic

In most Pakistani cities the psychiatry department is a known building, and being spotted walking into it is information that travels. An online consultation removes the building from the equation entirely. You are at home, on your own phone. There is no queue, no shared corridor, and nobody to recognise you.

Needing a mahram or a male relative to travel with you

If seeing a specialist means a journey to Lahore or Karachi, it usually also means arranging for someone to accompany you, taking a day of their time, and explaining where you are going. That requirement disappears when the appointment happens in your own home. No travel means no escort to arrange and no schedule to justify.

A husband or in-laws who would have to be told

You do not need anyone's permission to consult a doctor, and SehatYab does not contact your family. Booking confirmations and the meeting link go to the phone number and email address you enter, and nothing else is sent anywhere. Many women choose to tell their husband afterwards, once they know what the diagnosis is and what the treatment involves. That is your decision and your timing.

Not having independent money for a consultation

This is the barrier that gets talked about least and blocks the most. Payment can be made by debit or credit card, EasyPaisa, JazzCash or bank transfer, so it does not require a trip to a cashier or a signature from anyone else. An online consultation also removes the costs that usually dwarf the fee itself: transport, a day of lost work, and sometimes an overnight stay. Fees vary by clinician and are shown on each doctor's profile, and the full breakdown is on our consultation fees page.

Not wanting to appear on camera to a man

Then do not. You can choose a female psychiatrist at booking, and separately you can keep your camera off in any consultation, with any clinician. Both options are standard, both are available on every appointment, and neither one requires a conversation about why.

The fear that what you say will get back to the family

Your consultation is covered by medical confidentiality. Your psychiatrist does not report back to your husband, your parents or your in-laws, and clinical records are not released to family members or employers without your consent. If a relative contacts SehatYab asking about you, they will not be given information about your care.

Your session, your terms

Four choices you make, not us

A consultation is not a fixed format you have to fit yourself into. Four things are entirely up to you, and you can change your mind between one appointment and the next.

Your options in an online psychiatric consultation Four options presented as cards: video on with the camera showing you, camera off with audio only, a female clinician requested at booking, and a family member present in the room if you want one. ALL FOUR ARE AVAILABLE ON EVERY APPOINTMENT Video on A normal face to face consultation on screen Camera off Audio only, no picture, no explanation needed A female clinician Chosen by name when you book your slot Someone with you A relative in the room if that is what you want You can combine them, and you can change any of them next time.
You set the terms of the consultation. None of these choices affects the quality of the assessment: a psychiatric diagnosis rests on your history and your symptoms, described in your own words, and that works just as well with the camera off as with it on.
Camera Off? That's Fine.

Consulting without appearing on camera

Keeping your camera off is completely fine. Psychiatry is built on what you say, not what you look like - your symptoms, history and how they affect your daily life. A voice-only consultation is every bit as thorough and effective as one on screen.

Select a female clinician by name when you book - no explanation needed. Not ready to pay yet? Message us on WhatsApp and we'll confirm available slots before you commit.

If you are fasting, pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive, mention it at the start - it directly affects which medications are suitable and how they are dosed

Common reasons for consulting

What women most often bring to a female psychiatrist

These are the presentations our female consultants see most frequently. All of them are treatable, and most improve substantially with the right treatment.

Postpartum depression and anxiety

Low mood, tearfulness, intrusive fears about the baby, inability to sleep even when the baby sleeps, and a flat absence of feeling towards a child you expected to feel everything for. This is a medical condition with a clear treatment path, not a failure of motherhood. See postpartum depression treatment.

Mood change during pregnancy

Depression and anxiety in pregnancy are common and are often left untreated because of uncertainty about medication. A psychiatrist can weigh the risks of treating against the risks of not treating, and adjust or change medicines you were already taking before you conceived.

Premenstrual mood disturbance

Severe irritability, low mood, anxiety or hopelessness in the week or two before your period, lifting once it starts. When it is disrupting work or relationships every month, it is assessable and treatable rather than something to endure.

Menopause-related mood and sleep change

Disturbed sleep, night sweats waking you repeatedly, low mood, anxiety and difficulty concentrating during the perimenopausal years. These often get attributed to age and left alone. They respond to assessment and treatment.

Anxiety and panic attacks

Constant worry, a racing heart, breathlessness, chest tightness and the conviction that something is about to go badly wrong. Panic attacks are frequently mistaken for cardiac problems and investigated repeatedly before anyone names them. See online anxiety treatment.

Depression

Persistent low mood, loss of interest, exhaustion, appetite and sleep change, guilt, and difficulty carrying out ordinary daily tasks. Depression is the single most common reason women consult a psychiatrist, and it responds well to treatment. See online depression treatment.

Obsessive compulsive disorder

Intrusive thoughts that will not stop, repeated washing, checking, counting or seeking reassurance, and hours lost each day to rituals. OCD around cleanliness, prayer and contamination is often hidden for years because it can look like carefulness.

Trauma and PTSD

Flashbacks, nightmares, being permanently on edge, avoiding anything that reminds you of what happened, and a numbness that has settled over everything. Trauma symptoms can appear years after the event that caused them.

Sleep problems

Difficulty falling asleep, waking repeatedly through the night, or waking at four in the morning unable to get back to sleep. Insomnia is sometimes the whole problem and sometimes the first visible sign of depression or anxiety, and it needs assessing rather than medicating blindly.

The psychiatric side of infertility treatment

Repeated cycles, hormonal treatment, the monthly rhythm of hope and disappointment, and the family pressure that runs alongside all of it. The mood and anxiety effects of fertility treatment are real, well recognised, and treatable in parallel with the fertility care itself.

Choosing the right professional

Female psychiatrist or female psychologist?

Many people searching for one actually want the other. The distinction is straightforward.

A female psychiatrist

A medical doctor, MBBS followed by specialist psychiatric training, licensed by the PMDC. She diagnoses mental illness, prescribes and adjusts medication, manages side effects, treats severe and complex conditions such as bipolar disorder and psychosis, and reviews treatment that is not working. See a psychiatrist if you may need medication, if you are already on psychiatric medicines, or if symptoms are severe.

A female psychologist

A clinical psychologist trained in assessment and talking therapies such as CBT. She does not prescribe medication. She works with you weekly over a course of sessions on the patterns keeping a problem going. See a psychologist for therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulty or stress. SehatYab's psychologist panel is largely female, and you can browse all of them on Our Specialists.

Not sure which one you need?

Many people see both, with a psychiatrist managing medication and a psychologist providing therapy alongside it. If you are unsure where to start, our guide on psychiatrist vs psychologist walks through it, or you can message us and describe the situation in a few lines.

Who else can be in the room

Entirely your choice, either way. Some women want their mother, sister or husband present, particularly for a first appointment or when medication is being discussed and they would rather someone else also heard the explanation. Others want to speak alone, and that is equally reasonable. You can also ask a relative to join for part of the consultation and step out for the rest. If you would prefer to be alone and are finding that difficult to arrange, tell your doctor at the start and she will work with whatever the situation allows.

If your safety is a factor

If your own safety at home is part of what is affecting your mental health, you can raise it in a consultation. It will be treated confidentially, like everything else you discuss, and it will not be reported back to your family. If you are in immediate danger at any point, contact Rescue 1122 or Police 15 straight away rather than waiting for an appointment.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The things women ask us most often before booking.

Yes. SehatYab has four female PMDC-licensed consultant psychiatrists consulting online across Pakistan: Dr. Aalia Akhtar Hayat (19+ years, English, Urdu and Arabic), Dr. Qurrat Ulain (15+ years, FCPS Gold Medalist and ADOS certified), Dr. Kiran Aftab (8+ years, English, Urdu and Hindko) and Dr. Zarnain Umar (8+ years, Urdu, English and Punjabi). All four consult by video or audio call on Google Meet, so your location does not limit access. You choose the doctor yourself when you book, and appointments are usually available within a few days.
Yes, and you do not have to give a reason. On SehatYab you select the clinician by name when you book, so requesting a female psychiatrist simply means choosing one of the four female consultants from the psychiatrist list. Nobody asks why. If you would rather confirm availability before paying, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you which female doctors have slots open. The same applies to psychologists, where most of the panel is female.
Yes. Your consultation is confidential and SehatYab does not contact your family about it. The booking confirmation and the private Google Meet link go only to the phone number and email address you provide. Sessions are not recorded, and no one can join the call without the link. Your clinical notes and prescriptions are not shared with your husband, parents, in-laws or employer without your consent. The single exception is the one that applies to every doctor in Pakistan: a serious and immediate risk to life.
Fees vary by clinician and by their seniority, and each doctor's exact fee is shown on her SehatYab profile before you book, so you always see the amount before you pay anything. Female psychiatrists are not charged at a different rate to male psychiatrists. You can compare the four female consultants side by side on the psychiatrist listing, and the full explanation of how consultation charges work, including follow-up appointments, is on our online therapy consultation fees page.
Yes. Audio-only consultations are standard at SehatYab and are available with every clinician on every appointment. You do not need to explain the choice. A psychiatric assessment is built from your history and your description of your symptoms, so it works just as well by voice as it does on video, and the quality of the assessment is not reduced. If you would like to keep the camera off for the first appointment and turn it on later, or never turn it on at all, both are perfectly normal.
Yes, if you want them there. Many women prefer to have a husband, mother or sister present for a first consultation, particularly when medication is being explained and they would rather someone else also heard it. You can also ask them to join for part of the session and step out for the rest. Equally, you can consult entirely alone. It is your decision, and your doctor will follow whatever you say at the start of the call.
Yes. Booking is done online with the phone number and email address you choose to give, and confirmations are sent only to those. There is no clinic to visit and no letter posted to your home. Payment can be made by card, EasyPaisa, JazzCash or bank transfer, so it does not require a trip to a cashier. Choose a slot when you can be alone in a room with the door shut, and keep your camera off if that makes it easier. Many women tell their family later, once they understand the diagnosis.
Between the four of them: Urdu, English, Punjabi, Hindko and Arabic. Dr. Aalia Akhtar Hayat consults in English, Urdu and Arabic; Dr. Qurrat Ulain in English, Urdu and Punjabi; Dr. Kiran Aftab in English, Urdu and Hindko; Dr. Zarnain Umar in Urdu, English and Punjabi. Consulting in the language you actually think in matters in psychiatry, because describing mood, worry and sleep accurately is the whole basis of the diagnosis. If your first language is Pashto, Sindhi, Saraiki or Balochi, other clinicians on the panel cover those.
Yes. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose mental illness and prescribe medication, and who manages severe or complex conditions such as bipolar disorder and psychosis. A clinical psychologist provides talking therapy such as CBT over a course of weekly sessions and does not prescribe. If you may need medication, or you are already taking psychiatric medicines, you need a psychiatrist. If you want therapy, you need a psychologist, and SehatYab's psychologist panel is largely female. Many people see both at once.
Usually within a few days, and often sooner. Because there is no travel and no physical clinic capacity involved, availability depends only on the doctor's own schedule, which you can see live when you book. Evening and weekend slots are offered by several clinicians. If nothing suits with the female psychiatrist you have chosen, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you when her next openings are, or which of the other three female consultants can see you sooner.

SehatYab is an online clinic, not an emergency service

If you or someone close to you is in immediate danger, at risk of self-harm, or facing a medical emergency, contact the nearest emergency facility right away - Rescue / Ambulance 1122, Police 15, Edhi 115, Chhipa 1020, or the emergency department of your nearest government hospital.

You do not have to explain the preference

Four female PMDC-licensed consultant psychiatrists, private consultations on Google Meet, camera optional, and nothing shared with anyone without your consent.
