Understanding Depression

What Happens in the Depressed Mind

Depression is characterised by a self-reinforcing cycle that can feel impossible to break from the inside. Low mood reduces motivation to engage in activities. Reduced activity strips away opportunities for positive experience and achievement. This deepens the sense of hopelessness and worthlessness — and the cycle continues.
The cognitive dimension of depression is equally powerful: automatic negative thoughts about the self (“I am a failure”), the world (“nothing ever works out”), and the future (“things will never get better”) — known as Beck’s Cognitive Triad — maintain the emotional low and reinforce avoidance behaviours.
Evidence-based therapy interrupts this cycle at multiple points — through targeted behavioural change, cognitive restructuring, and emotional skills — producing lasting recovery rather than temporary relief.
Understanding Your Anxiety
The Depression Cycle
Low mood reduces activity. Inactivity deepens low mood. Therapy interrupts this cycle at multiple entry points.
Identifying Your Triggers
Cognitive Triad
Negative beliefs about self, world, and future maintain depression. CBT directly targets and restructures these patterns.
Challenging Unhelpful Thoughts
Behavioural Withdrawal
Avoidance of activities strips away positive reinforcement. Behavioural activation systematically reverses this pattern.
Managing Physical Symptoms
Emotional Numbing
Depression flattens emotional experience. Therapy gradually restores the capacity to feel positive emotions and connection.

Recognising Sadness & Depression

Depression presents differently in every person — but there are common patterns. Recognising the signs early gives you the best chance of effective, lasting recovery.
cbt
Persistent Low Mood
Feeling sad, empty, or hopeless for most of the day, nearly every day — often without a clear reason. Ordinary tasks feel heavy and joyless.
progress
Loss of Interest
Withdrawal from hobbies, activities, and social interactions that once brought pleasure or meaning. Apathy replaces engagement.
safe
Fatigue and Low Energy
Persistent physical and mental exhaustion even after adequate rest. Small tasks require disproportionate effort and concentration.
cbt
Negative Thought Patterns
Recurring thoughts of worthlessness, guilt, failure, or hopelessness. Self-critical inner dialogue that distorts how you see yourself and your future.
progress
Social Withdrawal
Retreating from relationships, avoiding contact with family and friends, feeling disconnected or like a burden to others.
safe
Cognitive Difficulties
Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering things. Mental fog that affects work, studies, and daily responsibilities.

Our Therapeutic Approach

Every package integrates the most robustly evidenced psychological frameworks for depression — addressing not just symptoms, but the underlying patterns that maintain them.
Understanding Your Anxiety
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
The gold-standard evidence-based approach for depression. CBT identifies and restructures the negative thought patterns and behavioural cycles that maintain low mood.
Identifying Your Triggers
Behavioural Activation
A core component of depression treatment — gently reintroducing meaningful and pleasurable activities to break the cycle of withdrawal and low mood.
Challenging Unhelpful Thoughts
Self-Compassion Training
Addressing the inner critic that fuels depression. Clients learn to relate to themselves with kindness, reducing shame, self-blame, and negative self-perception.
Managing Physical Symptoms
Mindfulness and Grounding
Mindfulness-based techniques help clients stay present, interrupt ruminative thinking, and develop a healthier relationship with difficult emotions.
Gradual Exposure Work
Validated Progress Tracking
PHQ-9 and WHO-5 assessments at key intervals ensure measurable, transparent progress throughout every package — not guesswork.
Building Long-Term Resilience
Relapse Prevention
Every package concludes with a personalized relapse prevention plan — identifying early warning signs, coping responses, and long-term wellbeing strategies.

How Depression Recovery Unfolds

Recovery from depression is a structured, evidence-based process — not a linear journey without setbacks, but a progressive movement toward lasting wellbeing with clinical support at every stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about depression therapy, our packages, and what to expect from the recovery process.

How do I know which therapy package is right for me?

Your therapist will conduct a comprehensive initial assessment using validated tools including the PHQ-9 and WHO-5 to determine the appropriate level of support. The Support Package suits mild, recent-onset low mood; the Recovery Package is designed for moderate depression affecting daily life; and the Restoration Package addresses persistent, significant, or recurrent depression requiring in-depth therapeutic work.

What is the difference between sadness and clinical depression?

Sadness is a normal emotional response to difficult circumstances — loss, disappointment, or life change. Clinical depression is characterised by persistent low mood lasting two or more weeks, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, significant fatigue, concentration difficulties, negative cognition, and functional impairment. If you are unsure, our initial assessment will help clarify the nature and severity of your symptoms.

What is Behavioural Activation and why is it used for depression?

Behavioural Activation is one of the most robustly evidenced treatments for depression. Depression creates a withdrawal cycle — low mood leads to reduced activity, which deepens low mood further. Behavioural Activation systematically and compassionately reintroduces meaningful, pleasurable, and routine activities to interrupt this cycle, restore a sense of achievement, and lift mood through action rather than waiting to ‘feel like it’ first.

Will I need to talk about difficult or painful experiences?

Not all treatment requires extensive exploration of the past. CBT and behavioural approaches focus primarily on present patterns — current thoughts, feelings, and behaviours — and practical skills. However, some sessions may involve exploring how earlier experiences or beliefs contribute to current difficulties. Your therapist will always move at a pace that feels manageable and safe for you.

Can therapy work alongside medication for depression?

Yes — research consistently shows that combined psychological therapy and antidepressant medication produces better outcomes than either intervention alone for moderate to severe depression. If you are currently taking medication or your clinician recommends it, our packages are fully compatible with concurrent pharmacological treatment. We also maintain appropriate referral pathways to psychiatric services for clients who may benefit.

What happens if I do not improve within the package?

Progress is measured at multiple points throughout every package using validated assessment tools. If insufficient progress is observed, your therapist will review the treatment formulation, discuss alternative therapeutic approaches, and where clinically appropriate, recommend a higher-level package, extended sessions, or referral for psychiatric assessment. Your care is always reviewed, not simply concluded.
