Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which therapy package is right for me?
Your therapist will conduct a comprehensive initial assessment using validated tools including the PHQ-9 and WHO-5 to determine the appropriate level of support. The Support Package suits mild, recent-onset low mood; the Recovery Package is designed for moderate depression affecting daily life; and the Restoration Package addresses persistent, significant, or recurrent depression requiring in-depth therapeutic work.
What is the difference between sadness and clinical depression?
Sadness is a normal emotional response to difficult circumstances — loss, disappointment, or life change. Clinical depression is characterised by persistent low mood lasting two or more weeks, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, significant fatigue, concentration difficulties, negative cognition, and functional impairment. If you are unsure, our initial assessment will help clarify the nature and severity of your symptoms.
What is Behavioural Activation and why is it used for depression?
Behavioural Activation is one of the most robustly evidenced treatments for depression. Depression creates a withdrawal cycle — low mood leads to reduced activity, which deepens low mood further. Behavioural Activation systematically and compassionately reintroduces meaningful, pleasurable, and routine activities to interrupt this cycle, restore a sense of achievement, and lift mood through action rather than waiting to ‘feel like it’ first.
Will I need to talk about difficult or painful experiences?
Not all treatment requires extensive exploration of the past. CBT and behavioural approaches focus primarily on present patterns — current thoughts, feelings, and behaviours — and practical skills. However, some sessions may involve exploring how earlier experiences or beliefs contribute to current difficulties. Your therapist will always move at a pace that feels manageable and safe for you.
Can therapy work alongside medication for depression?
Yes — research consistently shows that combined psychological therapy and antidepressant medication produces better outcomes than either intervention alone for moderate to severe depression. If you are currently taking medication or your clinician recommends it, our packages are fully compatible with concurrent pharmacological treatment. We also maintain appropriate referral pathways to psychiatric services for clients who may benefit.
What happens if I do not improve within the package?
Progress is measured at multiple points throughout every package using validated assessment tools. If insufficient progress is observed, your therapist will review the treatment formulation, discuss alternative therapeutic approaches, and where clinically appropriate, recommend a higher-level package, extended sessions, or referral for psychiatric assessment. Your care is always reviewed, not simply concluded.
