How to Choose the Right Psychologist in Pakistan

The difference between therapy that works and therapy that doesn't is often the choice you make before the first session. Here's how to choose well, what to check, what to ask, and what to walk away from.

The checklist

1. Verify the qualification, specifically

In Pakistan, anyone can print 'psychologist' on a card. What you want is a clinical psychology qualification, an MS/MPhil in Clinical Psychology or equivalent, with supervised clinical training. Ask directly, or choose a platform that verifies before listing. (Note: PMDC licenses physicians like psychiatrists; psychologists are credentialed through their clinical qualifications, which is why verification matters even more.)

2. Match the specialisation to your concern

A psychologist brilliant with couples may be the wrong choice for a teenager's school anxiety. Look for stated experience with your specific concern, anxiety, trauma, child and adolescent work, relationships, and ask how often they see cases like yours.

3. Judge fit in the first two sessions

Do you feel heard rather than lectured? Do they explain their approach in plain words? Do you leave with slightly more clarity than you arrived with? Fit is a legitimate clinical factor, research consistently ties the working relationship to outcomes, so treat switching as good judgement, not rudeness.

4. Know the red flags

Guaranteed cures or fixed timelines. Vagueness about qualifications. Judgement or lecturing dressed as therapy. Pressure to prepay long packages before any rapport exists. Breaches of small confidences. Any of these is reason enough to leave.

Frequently asked questions

Look for an MS/MPhil in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent) with supervised clinical training. On SehatYab, every psychologist is a verified, qualified clinical psychologist and credentials are displayed on each profile.
Not automatically. Fees reflect seniority and session length, but outcomes hinge on specialisation match and personal fit. A mid-fee psychologist who specialises in your concern usually beats a costlier generalist.
It matters if it matters to you. Comfort drives openness, and openness drives results — choosing a female psychologist, or an Urdu-speaking one, is a legitimate clinical preference.
Give it two to three sessions for fit, and a handful more for early movement. If nothing shifts after that, raise it openly — a good psychologist adjusts course or refers you onward.
Anytime, without awkwardness. Our support team will even suggest a better-matched professional based on what didn't work.
