Therapist vs Counselor vs Psychologist: What Each Title Actually Means

Three titles, used interchangeably in conversation, but they mean different things about training and what the professional is qualified to do. Here's the clean breakdown.

The definitions

Psychologist — the protected clinical qualification

A clinical psychologist holds a postgraduate clinical psychology qualification (MS/MPhil or higher) with supervised training. They assess psychological conditions and deliver structured, evidence-based talking therapy, CBT and related approaches. No medication: that's a psychiatrist, a medical doctor. (Their distinction is covered in our psychologist vs psychiatrist guide.)

Counselor — focused training, present-day focus

A counselor is trained in talk-based support, typically shorter, more focused training than clinical psychology. Counselors shine with specific present-day challenges: a relationship under strain, a stressful season, a decision, grief. For diagnosable conditions or deeper patterns, a clinical psychologist is the stronger match.

Therapist — the umbrella, not a qualification

'Therapist' isn't a credential; it's the everyday umbrella term covering anyone providing talk therapy, psychologists and counselors included. Useful in conversation, meaningless on its own as a qualification, which is exactly why you should always look at the specific training behind the word.

Why this matters in Pakistan particularly

Title use here is loosely regulated, so the same word can cover very different training levels. The protection is verification: on SehatYab, psychologists are verified, qualified clinical psychologists, counselors' training is vetted, and every profile shows the actual credentials, so the title is the start of the story, never the whole of it.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. 'Therapist' is an umbrella term for talk-therapy providers; a clinical psychologist is a specific postgraduate clinical qualification. Every psychologist can be called a therapist; not every therapist is a psychologist.
For a focused present-day challenge, a counselor is often ideal. For persistent anxiety, low mood, trauma, or anything that feels like a condition rather than a situation, a clinical psychologist's deeper training fits better. Our decision guide maps situations to professionals.
None of them. Medication guidance comes from a psychiatrist — a medical doctor — if clinically appropriate. Psychologists, counselors, and therapists provide talk-based support.
Differently qualified. Counseling training is real and effective for its scope; it's about matching the professional's depth to your need, not ranking titles.
Ask for the specific qualification, or use a platform that verifies it for you. On SehatYab every profile displays actual credentials, not just titles.
